Religious Prime Time

The « biblical soap operas » have recently reached Mozambique and quickly became very popular TV programs. Evangelical churches from Brazilian origin spread their message from Monday to Friday directly at the home of their believers through their TV screen.

Isménia, her mother, grandmother and siblings religiously gather each day in front of the TV at 8:45 pm.
She said, « We learn the Bible in a simpler way. Sometimes at the church we do not understand everything as they use complicated words. By following the soap “Jesus” that plays on Miramar channel we better learn the teachings of Christ ».

Peace, Love & Hope

Rastafarism is an ideology grounded on Christian beliefs, often seen as a religion per se. It preaches hope, liberty and salvation to all, as well as African Pride and African Unity. It embodies a social response to a history of enslavement and loss of sense of identity. Nowadays its influence is found all over the world with the famous motto «Peace and Love».

Alberto, who joined the community in search of a new hope after loosing a leg, is smoking the traditional pipe «Cuch» to purify the “Tabernáculo” during the ceremony worshiping the Ethiopian king and Rastafari God, Haile Selassie.

Hypnosis

Since the 1990s, Evangelical churches, mostly from Brazil, have settled in Mozambique. In their luggage they brought the Word of Christ, miracles for sickness and promises of a better life for all. The “Day D – Day of Final Decision”, organized by the IURD -Universal Church of the Kingdom of God – gathered around 180,000 believers inside and outside of the three stadiums Costa do Sol, Machava and Zimpeto. This mega cult, with a 2 months-time massive propaganda campaign, this huge ceremony has been the biggest religious event of all time in Mozambique.
